Welcome to Virginia's "None for the Road" Campaign!

Please join us this year to combat impaired driving. You can help by participating in Virginia's "None for the Road" campaign. The 2004-2005 Prevention Packet (downloadable from this Web page) will help you get started. Please browse through the packet for reference information, ideas, and summaries of what various law enforcement departments, schools and safety groups can do. We hope you will find this helpful as you plan your events.

Sample Proclamation

If you would like to commemorate "None for the Road" as a special day or month in your locality, you are welcome to modify this sample proclamation. Talk with your local Mayor, City Council, Board of Supervisors and/or public safety officials. Try to insert local information. You may want to use local statistics from the 2003 Virginia Traffic Crash Facts, published by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. You can find Virginia Crash Facts at www.dmv.virginia.gov

Make It "None For The Road" For The Holidays...and all year round.

WHEREAS, drivers and pedestrians impaired by alcohol and other drugs account for nearly half of all traffic fatalities; and
WHEREAS, there were 361 alcohol-related fatalities and 7,819 alcohol-related injuries in 2003 in Virginia; and
WHEREAS, there were 72 fatalities during the six major holiday periods. Forty-seven percent of these fatalities were alcohol related.
WHEREAS, drug and alcohol impaired drivers cause motor vehicle crashes that result in death and injury, cost an enormous amount of money and resources, and cause physical, emotional, and economic hardship for all those involved or touched by the crash; and
WHEREAS, intense public education and comprehensive community-based strategies can further reduce alcohol and drug-related highway crashes;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, (local dignitary), do hereby recognize December 2004 as NONE FOR THE ROAD MONTH, in (name of locality), and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
