In 2010, Virginia ABC received the Innovative Liquor Law Enforcement Program of the Year Award from the National Liquor Law Enforcement Association (NLLEA) for its Military Outreach initiative.

Military Outreach

Since 2008, Virginia ABC has joined forces with the U.S. Army and Navy to educate soldiers and sailors about the commonwealth’s alcohol laws and provide them with safe rides home. ABC’s goal is to help keep Virginia-based military men and women safe while on American soil. Its key message to military personnel is: “Don’t let alcohol stand in the way of your future.”

Military Safe Rides Home Program

Sponsored by Diageo and Southern Wine & Spirits and supported by ABC, the Military Safe Rides Home program provides a free taxi ride to soldiers and sailors from six participating locations in Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Safe rides home are available to military personnel who are:

  • At least 21 years old.
  • Picked up at one of the participating establishments (detailed at right and on downloads below).
  • Driven to a home or military base within 30 miles of the starting location.

NASCAR Driver Jamie McMurray served as spokesperson for the Safe Rides Home program when it kicked off in March 2009.

Training Video

In 2011, ABC partnered with the Naval Safety Center in Norfolk to develop “Drinking Your Way Into Trouble,” an alcohol awareness training video that will be distributed to more than 1,200 Navy and Marine bases globally. The training program offers sailors and marines information on alcohol laws, and reminds them of the penalties, both career and criminal, that can result from making poor decisions with alcohol.

Informational Materials

Abiding by Virginia’s alcohol laws is important as soldiers and sailors build their careers with the military. Knowledge of the laws and related penalties is a first step in keeping a record clean. As part of its partnership with branches of the U.S. military, ABC provides customized fact sheets and posters for distribution at the Fort Eustis and Fort Story army bases and the Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia. It has also recruited partners to help produce and place alcohol prevention TV and radio public service announcements in the Hampton Roads market and other areas of the state.
